Chelsea will set the record for most spending in the history of the Premier League

Chelsea are on the way to setting the record for most spending in history in the Premier League in a season after a series of blockbuster transfers.

Before the Financial Fairness Law was born, Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich spent £ 290 million on 19 new players in the first 15 months. If adjusted for inflation it would be around £ 450 million today.

But now, if Chelsea completes the purchase of Kai Havertz from Leverkusen for a club record £ 90 million they will set the highest spend of a Premier League team.

Havertz will follow in the footsteps of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell when these four players are recruited by the Blues for a fee of about £ 230 million.

Aside from Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr brought in on a free transfer, it’s clear Abramovich has returned to his own image in the early years of taking over.

There are six weeks left before the transfer window closes, Chelsea still has targets to pursue, such as Declan Rice of West Ham.

The London club did not spend in January and last summer. Due to the FIFA ban, they were only able to convert the Mateo Kovacic loan agreement into a permanent purchase for £ 40 million.

During this time, Chelsea raised more than £ 100m from the sale of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and £ 50m from Atletico Madrid to Alvaro Morata.

The departure of Hazard and Morata has helped reduce the salary bill, as was the case with David Luiz, Pedro and Willian recently.

Furthermore, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, UEFA agreed to loosen restrictions on the Financial Fairness Law that made Chelsea’s spending more flexible.

Clubs that spend the most in a season:

Chelsea 2020 – £ 230 million (Kai Havertz most expensive * – 90 million)

Man City 2017 – £ 223.8 million (Mendi most expensive – 51.75 million)

Man City 2015 – £ 187.09 million (De Bruyne is the most expensive – 54 million)

Chelsea 2017 – £ 186.03 million (Morata most expensive – 59.4 million)

Man Utd 2014 – £ 175.82 million (Di Maria is the most expensive – 67.5 million)

Man Utd 2016 – £ 166.5 million (Pogba most expensive – 94.5 million)
