Former midfielder Roy Keane thinks that Man Utd’s current players could cause Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to lose his job – as he did with Jose Mourinho.
“Man Utd’s performance against Tottenham is a shame, a disgrace to the badge on their jerseys. There are too many scammers and in the end they will make Ole lose his job.” Keane commented on ITV.
In the first two Premier League matches at Old Trafford, Man Utd suffered two heavy defeats: 1-3 against Crystal Palace and 1-6 against Tottenham.
In the second match, the home team soon took the lead thanks to a penalty from Bruno Fernandes. But the blunders of defenders like Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw led them back 2-1 within minutes. Anthony Martial’s red card in the 28th minute made things worse. Not only did he not narrow the gap, Man Utd also received four more goals and suffered the heaviest defeat in the era of the Premier League at home.
Keane is concerned that what is going on could cause coach Ole Solskjaer to lose his seat like what happened to Jose Mourinho – who was fired by Man Utd in December 2018 despite spending more than $ 520 million to upgrade the squad. “These players have harmed their predecessor (Mourinho) and they will do the same with Ole”, Keane expressed pessimism.
Solskjaer was initially appointed interim coach, succeeding Mourinho. After bringing Man Utd into the quarterfinals of the Champions League 2018-2019, he was signed a long-term contract. Last season, they did not win a title but the Old Trafford team somewhat went in the right direction by finishing the Premier League in third place. However, their competitiveness was once again questioned after winning just one game after the first three rounds of the season.
Before he saw Man Utd lose to Tottenham’s carpet, Keane had a sense of the difficult days of the old team, because he could not bring back the right contracts in the summer of 2020. Old Trafford’s team welcomed veteran striker Edinson Cavani, left-back Alex Telles, in the last day of the transfer season, but failed to chase Jadon Sancho, Ousmane Dembele.
After the break for the national teams, Man Utd will return with a trip to Newcastle’s field in Round 5 of the Premier League, at 2:00 on Sunday, October 18.
